In fact, your music is often used for weddings and other important events in people’s lives. You’re known for music that sets the mood. Yeah! And it had to be the right mood… And, for me, the right mood is heartfelt and classic arrangements, beautiful melodies, everything played well… I like an orchestra sound, and obviously I like the sound of a saxophone! So you wanted an album that was one continuous mood? I’d get in a mood and then there’s this song that kind of jumps out, and it breaks the whole mood. Well, what I didn’t like was that songs would just jump out.

You started making Christmas music years ago because you didn’t like a lot of the other Christmas albums out there. I wasn’t shocked, because I had already touched a chord with my music with people… I wasn’t shocked, but we were really, really pleased.

And when that sold 12 million, it was just great. Well, I had a couple of records before that that did really well (selling 4-5 million each). Oh yeah! And I don’t think there’s any way that’ll ever get broken now, because people don’t buy albums.ĭid you have any idea that the album would be as big of a monster as it was? Speaking of records, do you still have the record for the top-selling instrumental album of all time - with 1992’s “Breathless?”

And while I’m still young enough to be able to do it and not kill myself. If Jack Nicklaus was still playing golf, he’d probably want to win another major, even though he’s already got the most majors ever. I just want to set something that nobody else is going to be able to break. I want to time it for when I’m doing something that makes sense, such as a new record coming out. My idea is to hold a note at takeoff and keep holding it through the landing. I’m talking to some people at an airline – I’m not going to say which one at the moment – and we’re thinking about finding a flight that’s at least an hour. You previously set the record yourself, holding a note for 45 minutes using a method called circular breathing. I also read that you’re planning to break the Guinness world record for the longest sustained note on a musical instrument. Of course that’s part of it! If it works and it sounds great, what am I searching for? Something better? If I find something that works for me, I don’t really look around. It’s the one I play, I play for everything. Is that true? And do you bring it with you on tour? I was doing research for our interview, and I read that you still play your high school saxophone - an old Selmer soprano. The saxophone star chatted recently with The News-Press about Christmas music, breaking a Guinness world record and why “Breathless” will always be the biggest instrumental album of all time. Half of the show will be Christmas songs, he says, and the rest will be his other hits.

Kenny G will play “Songbird,” “Forever in Love” and other smooth-jazz hits when he performs Wednesday, Dec. “I don’t walk around with a big head, and I also don’t walk around with my head down, hoping nobody notices me. “I don’t ask people to put my music on at all, but sometimes they want to because they think I’ll like it,” he says. “Sometimes they’re playing it, and people are looking at me, and they’re looking up at the speakers, and I go, ‘Yeah, yeah, I know it’s me!’”īut Kenny G says he doesn’t mind. He’ll attend a wedding reception or eat dinner in a restaurant, and suddenly he’ll hear his own soothing sax pouring from the speakers. Kenny G can’t go anywhere, it seems, without somebody playing “Songbird” or another of his smooth-jazz hits.
